Labiaplasty

The external female genitalia consists of the vaginal opening, the opening of the urethra and a protrusion with many sensitive nerve endings – the clitoris. This entire area is covered on the sides by fine folds of skin – the labia minora, which meet in the area of the clitoris. The external female genitalia is covered on the sides by thicker folds of skin with fat pads – the labia majora. The labia majora usually completely cover and close the external genitalia.

However, sometimes it happens that the labia minora grow to a larger size or length and can then protrude between the labia majora. Usually this overlap is not too large, and so it does not cause any problems either aesthetically or functionally. However, if the labia minora protrude too much, it can cause problems both aesthetically and in practical life. Sometimes it is difficult to squeeze this excess into smaller women's panties or swimsuits, not to mention "tanga" panties, sometimes it even interferes with sports activities, for example when cycling. Intimate hygiene is also more complicated in these cases and this "defect" can also be a psychological obstacle to sexual life. Surgical correction, so-called labiaplasty, is then completely appropriate and has very good results. Occasionally we encounter requests for modeling or enlargement of the labia majora, but these operations are performed relatively rarely

Preparation for surgery

A necessary condition for the procedure is that the patient is of legal age. Another necessity is a thorough consultation examination by the surgeon, when in addition to the examination, the patient will receive detailed instructions on how the operation will be performed and what can be expected of her. The patient can agree with the surgeon on her requirements regarding the size or shape of the operated area. The surgery date should then be arranged so that the patient is operated on shortly after the end of menstruation.

The operation itself

The operation is most often performed in a combination of local anesthesia and analgosedation (in specific cases, even under general anesthesia. Before the operation, the surgeon will precisely measure the surgical incisions so that the resulting scars are not noticeable and, above all, do not bother the patient. Great attention must be paid during the operation, especially to the area around the clitoris, so that the delicate nerves that give this area special sensitivity are not disturbed.

In addition to very delicate and careful work, perfect control of surgical bleeding is absolutely necessary during the operation. After the adjustment, firm but gentle suturing of the surgical wounds is necessary. Various types of suture materials are used to suture the wound, sometimes absorbable, sometimes non-absorbable (such stitches must then be removed after healing). Which suture material will be used always depends on the surgeon and his experience. The operation lasts about one hour, depending on the scope of the operation, and is not particularly demanding for the patient. The pain after the operation is also not great, patients report only unpleasant, but not severe burning sensation in this area.

Postoperative care

After labiaplasty, patients are accompanied to their home care. It is good that they maintain a rest regime for the next period, about a week, avoid sitting for long periods, including long car rides, and have the opportunity to practice perfect hygiene several times a day. We recommend showering and washing with a mild disinfectant soap after each visit to the toilet and covering the area with an intimate pad. However, some patients tolerate it better and heal better if the operated area is completely uncovered and left "free". The operated areas are quite often quite swollen, but the swelling usually disappears within a few days. It is better if you are regularly checked by your surgeon. In any case, you must expect that healing will occur no sooner than 10 days, but usually no later than 14 days. The aesthetic effect of the operation can only be definitively assessed 1-2 months after the operation.

Results

Cosmetic genital surgery - labiaplasty – almost always bring very satisfactory results to patients. Of course, a lot depends on the experience of the surgeon to be able to prevent possible complications, which are not very common. But it also depends on the cooperation and discipline of the patient to be able to follow all recommendations in the postoperative period. Some doctors – sexologists – are not very fond of these operations, they are afraid of a possible decrease in sexual sensitivity in women who have undergone the operation. However, the experience of recent years, when labiaplasties are performed in our country, speaks rather of the opposite. Women who have undergone the operation usually report an improvement in sensitivity during sexual intercourse. Also, the fact that the operation removes their psychological problem with the appearance of the genitals contributes to their overall relaxation and improvement of experiences in their sexual life.
